Hospital Discharge Statistics by Diagnosis

This query generates custom tables for hospital discharges. Tables will display patient counts, rates, or length of stay (total or average) in each cell. Available row/column variables are: Year, Age Group, Sex, Race, Pay Source, Principal Diagnosis, and County. Because all diagnosis data have been reprocessed, queries run before January 11, 2008, will produce different results. Pay source information has also been categorized differently.

New hospital discharge query available! There are now two ways to query the hospital discharge data. For the years 1995-2007 you can query the data in the same way as before. For 2003-2007 we have added hispanic origin to the data. There is also a new feature that allows a query by bioterrorism or geographic region in addition to the whole state or county.

There are currently two options for querying data:

Create a table query using data that includes hispanic origin for the years 2003-2007. This provides the most flexibility for querying hospital discharge data.

Create a table query using data that does not include hispanic origin. This query is available for the eleven year span from 1995-2007.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) maintains a free on-line query system containing data on national and state level hospital discharge, emergency department use, and AHRQ quality indicators. HCUPnet uses Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) data for identifying, tracking, and analyzing national and state hospital statistics. It is located at http://hcupnet.ahrq.gov/.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services maintains an on-line query tool providing information on the quality of hospital patient care for selected medical conditions or surgical procedures. The information is obtained from a patient survey about the quality of care they received during a recent hospital stay. This information can be used to compare the quality of care provided by hospitals to their patients. Hospital Compare was created through a cooperative effort between the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and other members of the Hospital Quality Alliance: Improving Care Through Information (HQA). The data are submitted by hospitals agreeing to submit quality information for Hospital Compare. Selection options are available for most Kansas hospitals for a variety of quality indicators for medical conditions and surgical procedures.
